If you are making student loan payments for federal student loans, be sure to stay current on them. If you are unable to make the payments because of the coronavirus or for any other reason, apply for an income-driven repayment plan before you get behind on the loan payments. You are entitled to these plans when you apply for them — there are several of them and you usually get to choose which one you want — as long as you are current on your student loan payments. If your loans are in deferral and you were not behind on them when you got the deferral, you are current.
Unfortunately, these repayment plans are not available for private student loans, only for federal ones. If you are not positive whether your student loans are private or federal, go to nslds.ed.gov and set up an account. This is a U.S. government website and setting up an account is free. All loans shown here are federal loans. If your student loans are not here, they are private.
If you have gotten behind on your student loan payments and need help, contact a student loan attorney today. We can get you current on your federal student loans and into a repayment plan that you can afford.
